BONFISSUTO: UNMISSABLE SICILIAN DESSERTS

If you’ve been following along with Doing Italy’s Christmas fun over these past few weeks, then there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Bonfissuto. In case you missed it though, Bonfissuto is a Sicilian Pasticceria dedicated to reimagining Sicily’s best sweets (without offending Italian sensibilities). Imagined and run by the Bonfissuto brothers, you’ll not only be treated to moreish desserts but a whole world of Sicilian confectionaries including jams, creams, and Sicilian cookies. The best news? You can order their desserts online, no matter where you are in the world*.

The Bonfissuto Brothers

The Bonfissuto brothers, Giulio and Vincenzo, both have experience working in catering and restaurants, but their true passion lies in Sicilian sweets. So, they decided to start a Pasticceria together that would pay tribute to Sicily’s ancient pastry traditions, without being afraid to alter longstanding recipes or try something new. While we all know Italian food is a thing of joy, it’s great to see homegrown Italian chefs challenging tradition. The Bonfissuto Brothers bring fresh eyes to some of the region’s most famous products, like chocolate from Modica, pistachios from Bronte, and almonds from Avola.

Adopt a Pistachio Tree

If their passion for Sicily’s food culture was ever in doubt, this year the brothers launched a viral Kickstarter campaign to ‘adopt a pistachio tree’. Yep, you read that right! They invited fans of Sicilian sweets and sustainable agriculture from around the world to support them in their bid to grow sustainable, local pistachios to use in their creations. With over 1,000 supporters, the Kickstarter was a roaring success (I’m just sad I missed out on my chance to have my own pistachio tree!). The reward for supporting their campaign? A prized pistachio panettone.

 Panettone

Now, we’ve already gone into detail about Panettone in our Very Merry Italian Christmas post, but I couldn’t not bring it up again! There is just something so joyous about a fluffy, light panettone filled with sweet pops of candito (candied fruit and nuts). Never being ones to let tradition get in the way of a good dessert though, the Bonfissuto brothers have taken it to a new level. Their pistachio panettone, covered with white chocolate and whole Sicilian pistachios, also comes with a jar of delicious pistachio cream. There’s also an ’18 carat chocolate panettone’, finished with gold leaf and a rich chocolate cream from Modica that looks wonderfully decadent. Or, for those who like things a little bit sweet and a little bit sour, try the Sour Cherry, Lemon, and Franciacorta Panettone.

Basically, Bonfissuto has done the impossible, and they’ve made Italian Christmas even better!

You can visit Bonfissuto’s online store here, or follow them on Instagram and never miss out on their delicious dessert inventions again!

*Okay so I’m not sure about that part, but I DO know that Bonfissuto ships to the US!

** I also want to give a big shout out to Livio and Katrin from Zest of Italy for helping me discover this incredible artisan bakery.
