discover ABRUZZO - 2018

Discover this virtually untouched region of Italy with a local tour guide and capture the experience with a group photographer

Feel like you’ve been swept back to a slower era by visiting the Central Italian Region of Abruzzo. You’ll stay in one of the regions characteristically charming hilltop medieval villages, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. You’ll witness the areas majestic mountain ranges and its UNESCO heritage sites. With your fellow travelers, you’ll also hunt for truffles and break bread that you made and baked in a wood-burning oven.

Meet up with the rest of the group by 3 pm in Central Rome. From there you’ll travel together to the charming medieval hamlet, which will be your base for the next few days. You’ll be staying at a lovingly-restored boutique hotel. Your stay will transport you back to centuries ago when these local stone constructions were built. Rest up for a couple of hours or explore the village on your own. That evening you will meet the group for your welcome dinner over Italian wine and lots of simple yet superbly delicious local dishes sourced from ingredients from the immediate surroundings.

Meals: Welcome Dinner

Today you’ll get to experience the breathtaking tour of the Gran Sasso (think plateaued grasslands populated almost solely by grazing cows and sheep on a backdrop of jagged snow-capped mountains) as well as Rocca Calascio. Along the way, you’ll stop at a roadside butcher shop where you'll select your meats, including “arrosticini” a typical Abruzzo lamb kabob and roast your selections while taking in the view.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch

And off to the coast you go. Specifically to view an authentic and still actively functioning “trabocco” a wooden fishing structure that connects the land to the sea. Then their cooks will prepare your lunch using the fish and seafood you helped catch. You’ll also visit a stunning ancient abbey with 360-degree views of the sea, before heading back to the hamlet for the night.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch

Take it easy this morning or ask the hotel for a bike to wander the surrounding back roads. Just be back in time for the bread making class or truffle hunting expedition. We’ll split the group into two, but, don’t worry, you’ll have tomorrow to try the other activity. In the evening, the group will gather again to enjoy a scrumptious local meal and reminisce with one another on the past day's experiences.

Meals included: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner

This morning you’ll do the other activity (bread making or truffle hunting). After lunch, you’ll hop on the private bus for the winding journey back to Rome.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch
